Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what therapy or service is right for me?
Most of the time, people kind of know what they need—and that’s a good start. If you’re not sure whether you need CBT, DBT, or XYZ therapy, that’s ok. Just give us a basic overview of what’s going on with you and we’ll take it from there. The first thing to do is give us a call or shoot us an email. Take a look at the Approach section of our site for some ideas of what you would like out of therapy.
What if I don’t like my therapist or I think we aren’t a good fit?
Great question. We don’t take it personally. Not everyone is a good fit! You have the right to choose your provider and to switch at any time. We don’t want you to just not come back! Contact Aaron and let him know. He will help you figure out the next step. We want you to feel good about your choice.
Why does therapy cost so much and why don't you take insurance?
Not to brag, but our clinicians are so skilled and highly trained, we actually don't have to take insurance to fill our caseloads. We don't see just anyone and we give it our ALL. We are totally worth it. For insurance sake, know that PSYCHē is an "Out-of-Network" provider which means we don't take insurance directly. Now that doesn't mean you can't use your insurance. Whooooa...hold up? Bear with me. Because we chose long ago to "opt out" of participation in insurance, we have saved time and effort that we continue to put into YOUR care. But the really cool thing is, for most of our providers, you can file with insurance and get reimbursed a substantial amount of money (60% or more in some cases). Just ask us about how to submit a superbill--we're glad to help. We've also had great luck with writing a letter on your behalf explaining to the insurance company that we are basically the only ones around offering this level of care! Did you know we are the ONLY ones in Boston with a Board Certified DBT therapist on staff? You may even seek prior approval and get the whole thing covered as an "In Network" service even though it's not! We've seen it happen more than once.
Why do you guys require financial contracts for some services?
We don’t require contracts for every service, but they are always required for Dialectical Behavior Therapy and therapy with kids and adolescents. We found over the years that there is a HUGE temptation for people to reschedule sessions, drop out before treatment is complete, or skip a week (or 4) for a variety reasons—but mainly because they are getting better! Feeling better is great, but if you stop the treatment before it’s completed, it’s like stopping an antibiotic before you finish the bottle—not good…and symptoms are likely to return in full force. Our contracts are a way to improve the chances that people come regularly, that they complete treatment, and that they stay feeling better. This also allows our clinicians to plan their schedules more consistently. They have only so many slots and when those are filled, it’s the waiting list for new people!
How long does a contract last?
That depends. Our DBT financial contracts usually last 6 months, but the treatment itself takes a year or more. In other words, just because you finish a contract doesn’t mean you’re done. We’ve had patients ask us to renew a contract for another 6 months to help hold them accountable for attendance! Sometimes we renew contracts and sometimes we try it al a carte to see how we do.
Do you prescribe medication?
We do not have a prescribing provider on staff but we definitely work with many Providers in the area. For more information on recommended clinicians and programs in the area visit our REFERRALS page.
How do I make a payment?
You will make a payment online or on the phone for all first time appointments. This minimizes the likelihood that we will be targeted by an axe murderer and also holds your time slot--'cause it's already paid for! We use Paypal, but you don't have to have a Paypal account to make it work. Click the "Pay Via Paypal" button on the CONTACT US page and you will be redirected to the PayPal website. Type in the cost of your session and follow the prompts. Not sure about the rate of your session? Call our Front Office at 615.274.8400 (as usual).
How do I get to your office(s)?
Call us! Or if you hate making that call, send us an email. You can also find a map of our Nashville location HERE and our Boston location HERE. Don’t be afraid to call Aaron at 615.274.8400 for personalized directions to both of our locations.
How much is each session?
That depends on which therapist you choose, how much expertise and experience they have, and whether they are in training or are fully licensed. Give us a call, shoot us an email, or send us a chat for specifics. We usually have a students-in-training with limited slots for reduced rate treatment--call or email to find out if there's an opening.
What’s the difference between a licensed therapist, unlicensed therapist, and intern?
Such a great question we wrote a whole blog about it. You can check it out HERE.
